Traditions
A whole boatload of traditions surround our observance of this time of year.
Some are religion-based; others have sprung up from our families. We decided
last time that there are some things we can learn from the whole Advent
circle of traditions, but what about all of these other things we do?
Well ... we didn't really get to talk about all of that, because we had so
much fun singing Christmas carols! We started with an odd one -- a carol that
doesn't even mention Christmas! -- "Good King Wenceslas." Now, we confess that
the version we sang wasn't exactly in the Old English of the original. Our
faithful leader tried to be as faithful as possible in reworking some of the
more difficult phrases. The end result is attached, and it went pretty well.
Then we sang by request, and we were very, very grateful for the beautiful
guitar accompaniment of Nathan Martin, who even transposed some of our old
favorites into keys we could reach. It was a delightful evening that really rang
in the season for several of us.
Just as the topic of traditions that never came to fruition, so was the fate
of the Unsermon. Diane did some preliminary research, which we attach here just
for your amusement and entertainment, and planned to speak extemporaneously from
that, but alas, it went unused, because we filled the time with joyful song!
