What is the Bible to Us? Having discussed the church, Jesus, and God, now it's time to ponder the role of the Bible. For progressive Christians, what does the Bible mean to our faith? Do we read every word literally, do we read every word metaphorically, or is the answer some combination of the two? The Bible is "our book"; that can't be denied. So it's important to know our way around in it. It can be confusing, with testaments and books and chapters and pericopes and verses. ("Huh?") Why are there four Johns, two Peters, two Timothys? What in the world is a Thessalonian? (Can you even say that?) We listened to a couple of songs that helped us navigate the maze. Yes, Diane used them in her Confirmation classes with 8th graders, but that didn't insult the Unchurch group! Yes, they have sort of a mild rap beat, but that didn't nauseate them, either! They're really good tools to help those odd words stick in your head so at least when you hear one of them in casual conversation (yeah, right), you'll know that it's actually in the Bible and not the titles of some extrabiblical texts that you truly have never heard of. The artist? Bryan Sirchio. Here's his web site: www.sirchio.com. We also shared Communion together with the kids, and then they went downstairs to the childcare area. Guest speaker Rev. Jim Vierra presented the Unsermon, so we don't have an outline to post online.
